Wing Chun’s Second Form: Seeking the Bridge – Chum Kiu

October 13, 2019 by danma Leave a Comment

In last night’ class I started learning Wing Chun’s second empty hand form Chum kiu. From what I understand this form provides an assortment of techniques to nullify gap bridging from an opponent. It also introduces turning and footwork and some simultaneous attack and defense techniques. Here are a few interesting things I found online:

  • the Hacking Elbow technique
  • Chu Shong Tin
11/11/2019 Update

I found some more information on Nima King’s website:

  1. The application of “two-way” force: The turning in this form creates a force pointing from two different directions.
  2. Using the center of the body as the source of energy: This will apply your whole body weight behind your limbs.
  3. Using the mind to control the movement of the body: Be in your body and not focused in your hands.
  4. Using the simultaneous attack and defense movements

6/1/2020 Update:

I am able to remember the sequences. My turning has improved. I will focusing on the water element. Water puts out fire. Water represents flow and wisdom.

Dan Chi Sao

September 1, 2019 by danma 1 Comment

While I was training the Wing Chun Internal Punch with Sifu, Veronica was practicing footwork and Dan Chi Sao with Noel. I wanted to record some notes about Veronica’s session on Dan Chi Sao, which was informed by Noel’s visit to Kenneth Chung.

  1. Jum Sau – Sinking hand: Fingers point up, elbow sinks down and towards the center
  2. Bong Sau – Wing arm: Fingers point towards the opponent like a corkscrew. The forward intent can break the opponents structure.
  3. Fuk Sau – Resting hand: Heavy elbows.
  4. Taan Sao — Dispersing hand: Forward intent to break structure.

Understanding My Wing Chun Lineage

July 24, 2019 by danma 1 Comment

My partner and I with Steve

Sigung Steve Fuller came to visit our class last weekend. It sparked my interest in knowing my lineage better. I mapped out my lineage for both Hung Ga and JKD. It took a little more time to map out a lineage for Wing Chun.

Wing Chun Internal Punch

July 15, 2019 by danma 1 Comment

In the last few classes I had the opportunity to understand how this internal punch is executed. Somethings I’ve learned:

  • Lower body
    • Align the “bubbling springs” on your feet on the imaginary tightrope
    • Square your hips and shoulders
    • Keep a low center of gravity low
    • weight is on the back leg
    • To advance forward and fill in the range gap between you and the target, simply push your back foot’s heel into the ground and move your body’s structure into range
  • Upper body
    • The forearm is totally relaxed and perpendicular to the floor at all times
    • The fist is tight only enough to keep a structure so that it does not twist your wrist out of alignment
    • Keep your shoulders relaxed pressed down and back into the body so that it is not free-floating
    • With your shoulders locked into your body and keeping your forearms perpendicular focus on:
      • Hitting with your elbow by opening your elbow
      • Keeping your fist in the center-line
      • Focus on behind the target
      • Imagine that you’ve already hit, then hit

Lightening Hand Dynasty Pass

Two Four Day Punch Cards

We upgraded to our membership at Lightening Hands from two 4-day punch cards to Dynasty Pass. My partner and I had a great session last night that focused on energy drills.

I had noticed that when I am in the inside position, I tend to raise my left elbow up, which then put me in a vulnerable position. Sifu said that I need to bring my elbow down instead of keeping myself exposed. It occurred to me that the reaction comes out of Taming the Tiger, and that beginning move ends with a downward movement that controls while protecting the sides. I would like to test this out.
