Last night we had the unique opportunity to bring both our kids to class, which turned out to be a success. For our teenage boy, I think it is good for his development to get an idea of what I like to call “soft power”, which I think our Wing Chun class does a good job at.
To me soft power is an alternative to dealing with conflict, which means instead of fighting force with force, you can redirect it in a positive constructive way. This is something our society isn’t showing enough of. You can easily see the contrast with MMA attitudes and the actions of our political leaders. Martial arts today is sold to us as a vehicle for macho-ism, but if taught right, could also be a method for cultivating positive social change. This method disciplines one to take responsibility into their own hands rather than rely on leaders and institutions who’s sole responsibility is to money.
