Last week my spouse and I went to our first Wing Chun class. Veronica’s membership to Portland City Boxing class schedule hasn’t been serving her very well since she started up a part time job, so she put her membership on hold. We are both fans of the Wing Chun the movie–especially Veronica, who enjoys the feminist overtones. I found the Lightning Hand Academy of Wing Chun Kung Fu online and bought 2 punch cards.
We found the class to be a pleasant and safe learning environment. Sifu Ray was very open and passionate about Wing Chun. His lineage teaches a soft style. It was interesting learning some these concepts, and I am interested in learning more of this internal soft power.
Sifu Ray told us to look at Mindful Wing Chun, so I did after a couple of days. One video that was interesting is “Bruce Lee’s Wing Chun and Training”. In the video he mentions how Bruce Lee missed the internal side of Wing Chun and is perhaps why Bruce Lee felt his Wing Chun was limited. Not sure how I feel about this, but I do find it interesting. I already feel a conflict with what is being taught at this school and my JKD training. Out of respect, I did have a conversation with Octavio about taking up this class with my spouse, and he did not object. He did warn me about getting caught up in the “classical mess”. I believe I will try to keep an “empty cup” approach to learning from two different masters. Hopefully the conflict won’t be too much, but I would like to continue going to Lightning Hand as I think Veronica will blossom into this art.
Sifu Ray emailed me yesterday to share a couple of related videos for us, which I very much appreciate his openness and availability:
